Slate is hiring a full-time engagement editor to join its audience development team. Ideal candidates will think strategically about how to sustain and delight a loyal audience and also be excited about engaging new readers and listeners. They can translate Slate’s voice to different platforms and hit the right tone, whether we’re amplifying serious news of the day or a bonkers advice column. Candidates will have strong news judgment: During major events, this person will highlight Slate’s distinctive coverage across platforms. They will write compelling headlines in Slate’s voice (and teach others how to write them, too). They’ll also be eager to experiment with new platforms, partnerships, and ideas, and they will spot the ways digital media trends are changing so we can move quickly when it makes sense. Demonstrated expertise in SEO and/or social distribution is a plus. Slate welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The position can be located in New York or D.C. Strong remote candidates will be considered. This is a position covered under a collective bargaining agreement between Slate and the Writers Guild of America, East. The salary minimum for this position is $71,000, but compensation will reflect applicants’ experience.   Key Responsibilities -       Build and execute strategies to reach new readers and engage our loyal audience -       Shape Slate’s presence and voice on social media -       Collaborate with editors to optimize stories for success on search, social, and other platforms—you are the newsroom’s expert on best practices and can help improve our headlines as well as offer expertise in packaging stories -       Help determine Slate’s distributed platform strategy: maintain relationships with platform partners, pitch our stories, and find new opportunities Requirements -       At least three years of experience as a social media editor, audience engagement editor, or similar role for a publication -       A passion for news and journalism -       The ability to write compelling headlines and an understanding of Slate’s voice -       A deep interest in how audiences find stories and how Slate can build loyalty among our readers -       An understanding of social media, SEO, and the latest trends regarding where news readership is happening -       Top-notch communication and organization skills Slate is committed to excellence through diversity, which involves attracting talented people from diverse backgrounds and traditions.
