We are looking for a design system leader and subject matter expert with demonstrable experience building, executing and evangelizing design systems. You will inspire and lead the design system design team, and define the vision and strategy. Your mission is to make a world-class design system that rivals Polaris, Atlassian Design System, Carbon, and Spectrum!


The ideal candidate has a strong background in design, user experience, front-end development, and a proven track record in managing, evolving and maturing design systems. This role requires you to be a systems and platform thinker, and also a strong partner and collaborator to your stakeholders in the Design, Engineering and Product orgs. You will work closely with these partners to ensure our design system improves the lives of our designers, engineers and ultimately our end customers.


This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we're looking for:
  • 6+ years of experience in Product Design, UX Design, and Interaction Design. This should include at least 3 years of Design System work
  • You've led the creation of a design system with complex products, cross-functional teams and continually evolving customer needs. You have experience working on a design system that is multi-platform (Web, Mac, Windows, Android and iOS)
  • Proven ability to partner with Design, Engineering and Product to formulate, prioritize and execute against a design systems roadmap
  • Ability to quantitatively and qualitatively understand complex data, insights and problems. Then leverage data and insights to prioritize business and customer needs
  • Ability to plan, design and execute advocacy and socialization programs to drive awareness and adoption of a design system
  • Previous experience defining and measuring the success of a design system
  • A portfolio that demonstrates detailed design thinking and problem-solving for the overall user experience, with an emphasis on design systems
  • Broad knowledge of front-end code, programming languages, and responsive web principles
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity. Excel in a fast-paced environment with a lot of context switching. You’ll have to move quickly and learn fast
  • You are an advocate for inclusive design. You have demonstrable experience working on and improving the accessibility of digital products
  • Experience managing and coaching a team of design system product designers
  • Proficiency with Figma componentry and variables, and library management


What you can expect:
  • You’re an advocate for our design system, you’ll help raise the bar for design, UX and product thinking across 1Password, and be a trusted partner to your key stakeholders in Design, Engineering and Product.

  • Month 1
  • Familiarize yourself with:
  • Our past, present, and proposed design system roadmap, initiatives and efforts
  • Current design process, tools, and methodologies utilized by the design team
  • The overall product development process
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews with relevant Design, Engineering, Product and Marketing stakeholders to develop an understanding of internal customer pain points and needs
  • Identify the gaps and opportunity areas in our design system components and operations
  • Review and audit internal design system site and documentations
  • Help align our design language in new and existing components

  • Month 3
  • Take the first steps towards planning improvements based on gaps and opportunities identified
  • Partner with Design, Engineering and Product to:
  • Set a design system vision and strategy
  • Set design system roadmap
  • Set and map out a plan to achieve key performance metrics and OKRs that define a successful design system
  • Set the course for an evangelization and advocacy campaign
  • Work with your partners to encourage and enforce the use of design system to enable consistent experiences, reuse, and more efficient design and development across designers and engineers

  • Month 6
  • Measure, improve and iterate on key performance metrics and OKRs
  • Measure the effectiveness of design system advocacy program; Iterate and make improvements as needed
  • Enable, encourage and educate the design department to continue to create and curate the design system
  • Partner with your stakeholders on our 2025 design system roadmap

USA-based roles only: The Annual base salary for this role is between $196,000 USD and $265,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.


Canada-based roles only: The Annual base salary for this role is between $172,000 CAD and $232,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
