About the Role:
The Planetary Variables team empowers software developers and teams to build, deploy and operate a variety of analytics services that process geospatial data. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead software development initiatives and guide our continued evolution of new and existing analytics in collaboration with your teammates.
Impact You’ll Own:
- Pushing the boundaries of the possible in using automated analytics to derive value from geospatial data
- Exploring, analyzing and and evaluating potential new lines of analytic capability to bring value to the Planet Platform, our customers and the world
- Developing and improving high value analytic capabilities for the Planet Platform
- Fostering greater consistency of engineering practices across software teams, and providing “golden paths” to support those practices
- Authoring technical design documents and architectural decision records
What You Bring:
- Demonstrated capability as both leader and individual contributor throughout the journey from design through shipping and operations
- Experience leading organization-wide efforts to improve building, deploying, and maintaining a complex set of software services
- Passion for identifying opportunities to improve practices, explore solution options, and socializing ideas with colleagues toward fostering common cause
- Mentorship of engineers and “lifting all boats” in an organization
- Passion for improving the status quo and making teams work better together
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral
What Makes You Stand Out:
- Pride in “being glue” and doing work behind the scenes to keep a team moving forward
- Experience building and fostering adoption of observability tools, especially Prometheus and Grafana
- Extensive experience running Linux in the cloud with VMs, containers and Kubernetes
- Experience managing both complex microservices and high traffic services (thousands to tens of thousands reqs/sec) using technologies like nginx, Envoy, or HAProxy

Compensation (only applicable for Colorado applicants):
The base pay range targeted for this position in Colorado is: $156,600 - $243,900. This role is eligible for equity.
The actual offer, including the compensation package, is determined based on multiple factors, including experience, location, and other business considerations.
